Sunar Sugiyou
Singaporean, Â b.1962
Sunar Sugiyou utilises a wide variety of media, including acrylic, mixed media collage and assemblage, but is best known for his Chinese ink painting of streetscapes and nature. Sunar’s works express various aspects of his identity and heritage, in terms of his philosophies, cultural roots and love for tradition.  Most of his works are based either on historical references or symbolically reflect his religious beliefs even if they are not overtly spiritual. One of his main beliefs is how harmony and balance in nature come in pairs – yin and yang, good and evil, black and white, birth and death.

Finding My Roots: A 30-Year JourneyÂ
The last thirty years have been a journey of discovery, not just of the past, but of myself. I traveled to the places my father spoke of, walked the paths my ancestors once tread, and immersed myself in the culture and traditions that shaped their lives. Each experience added layers to my understanding and brought me closer to my heritage. These are the series of study sketches I made over a period of 30 years visiting to Prambanan complex before I started to paint the ink paintings in 2023.
