Sunar Sugiyou
Singaporean,  b.1962

Sunar Sugiyou utilises a wide variety of media, including acrylic, mixed media collage and assemblage, but is best known for his Chinese ink painting of streetscapes and nature. Sunar’s works express various aspects of his identity and heritage, in terms of his philosophies, cultural roots and love for tradition.  Most of his works are based either on historical references or symbolically reflect his religious beliefs even if they are not overtly spiritual. One of his main beliefs is how harmony and balance in nature come in pairs – yin and yang, good and evil, black and white, birth and death.

Empress of the cradle, 2014

Soft & hard pastel, charcoal, graphite, pencil oil stick on linen

250 × 15o  cm

Empress of the cradle is a masterpiece that represents my bloodline to my ancestor and heritage of where I am from.

A majestic piece from ” A 30-Year Journey in Ink “

The last thirty years have been a journey of discovery, not just of the past, but of myself. I traveled to the places my father spoke of, walked the paths my ancestors once tread, and immersed myself in the culture and traditions that shaped their lives. Each experience added layers to my understanding and brought me closer to my heritage.

This series of ink paintings is more than just art; it is a homage to my father’s love and the legacy he has passed down. Each piece in the series is infused with the stories he told, the lessons he taught, and the love he bestowed. It is through his eyes that I learned to see the world, and it is through my art that I seek to honor his memory.

In sharing this tribute, I invite you to reflect on your roots, to explore your heritage, and to celebrate the love and legacy that shape your existence. After all, it is through understanding our past that we can truly appreciate the present and look forward to the future.
